Reciprocal teaching is a technique based on teacher modeling, student participation, and four strategies that good readers use to comprehend text: predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing. Although reciprocal teaching originally was designed for use with struggling readers, author Lori D. Oczkus offers innovative lessons aimed at improving the reading comprehension of all students. Reciprocal Teaching at Work: Strategies for Improving Reading Comprehension provides a practical classroom resource on reciprocal teaching that readers will find accessible and engaging. Chapter 1 describes each reciprocal teaching strategy in detail and suggests ways that teachers can overcome both difficulties that they may encounter when using this teaching technique and common problems that students have with using the strategies. Chapters 2–4 explain how to use reciprocal teaching in whole-class sessions, guided reading groups, and literature circles, respectively. Each of these chapters offers scaffolded lessons, minilessons, and reproducible forms for classroom teachers to use with students, and reflection questions for staff development.
